The TransferCalc Internet Speed Test runs entirely inside your browser using a modern, multi-stage measurement engine designed for precision and low overhead:
- 1. Ping & Latency: Sends multiple lightweight timestamp probes to global Cloudflare edge servers to measure round-trip time (RTT). The first probe is discarded to warm up the connection, and the median of subsequent samples is recorded as your true latency in milliseconds.
- 2. Adaptive Download Throughput: Begins with a 1 MB probe to assess link capacity without causing network bufferbloat. It then dynamically selects a 5 MB, 10 MB, or 25 MB payload to measure sustained steady-state download throughput in Megabits per second (Mbps).
- 3. Streaming Upload Benchmark: Streams memory-efficient binary test data to our serverless endpoint, measuring upstream bandwidth while discarding the payload immediately without saving any data.
Understanding Your Results (Mbps vs. MB/s)
Network providers quote internet connection speeds in Megabits per second (Mbps), but software downloads, cloud backups, and disk transfers display transfer rates in Megabytes per second (MB/s).
Because there are 8 bits in every byte, your actual file download speed is approximately one-eighth of your advertised connection speed:

If your measured throughput differs from your broadband package, several common factors may be responsible:

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps stands for Megabits per second, which is the standard unit internet service providers use to advertise bandwidth. MB/s stands for Megabytes per second, which is how file downloads (like browser files, games, and videos) are measured. Since 1 Byte equals 8 bits, divide your Mbps speed by 8 to get your real-world download rate in MB/s (for example, a 100 Mbps connection transfers up to 12.5 MB/s).
Why does my speed test result differ from what my ISP promised?
Internet service providers advertise maximum theoretical speeds under optimal laboratory conditions. Real-world speeds can be reduced by Wi-Fi signal interference, network hardware limitations, active background downloads on other household devices, and peak-hour internet congestion.
How much data does this speed test consume?
Our adaptive speed test uses between 15 MB and 50 MB of data depending on the speed of your connection. Fast gigabit connections use slightly more data to ensure a reliable measurement window, while slower mobile connections automatically use smaller payloads.
